The Proposal

12 May 2005 (Thursday)

It was eL and Cy’s dating anniversary and they would be going to celebrate after work. However, this time round, eL didn’t disclose details of the place that they would be going for dinner. eL wanted to give Cy a surprise and kept her in suspense even throughout the journey. She was busy guessing along the way and never got any of her guesses right. She even joked if he was going to sell her away but he just smiled it off. Deep inside her, she was aware that it must be a special place because he had given her a hint to be dressed formally for the dinner. She was extremely excited! His car arrived at Meritus Mandarin Hotel, Orchard Road and they proceeded to take a lift to the highest floor. It was ‘Top of the M Revolving Restaurant’!

The floor-to-ceiling windows created a ‘top of the world’ feeling and provided an unobstructed scene of the sea and the city sights, especially with the seats all arranged at the side. When they had dinner at the Equinox in June 2004, they were alittle disappointed with their seats as they were a table away from the windows. This was indeed a wonderful change! They exchanged their gifts and she received a Gucci ‘Envy Me’ perfume. Wasn’t that something that they saw when they went shopping some time ago? She was pleasantly surprised by his thoughtfulness and a good memory.

They were serenaded by a group of musicians who went from table to table and eL dedicated “Just the Way You Are” and “Nothing’s Gonna Change My Love for You”. It was just so romantic and lovely … She was still in a half-dreamy mode after the musicians proceeded to the next table when he took out a supplementary card application form for her to fill in. Wow, another pleasant surprise!

After enjoying a few courses, eL handed Cy a card:

The name of the perfume ‘Envy’ must have given eL an inspiration to use that as a theme in this card. When she had finished looking through the card, he asked her to close her eyes. As she opened her eyes, she saw this card in front of her and her heart skipped a beat:

He was already on a bended knee beside her with a diamond ring in his hand. She teased him and said, “What does this say?”

“Will you marry me?” he popped the question.

“Yes,” she smiled. He put the ring onto her finger and gave her a peck on the cheek.

She was in cloud-nine but too shy to react. So she had a rather silly grin on her face.

The complete revolution took about two hours and fifteen minutes and their full course dinner was nicely timed to coincide with one full revolution and at the same time fit the pace at which they consumed their meal. The food was absolutely fantastic and there were so many courses in their dinner that Cy was already full before their main course arrived. It was definitely a gastronomic experience! Most importantly, it was truly an unforgettable and significant night to be remembered for the rest of their lives.
